These are braces that are designed generally to correct simple problems which involve one or two teeth which may be in the wrong position such as having one tooth that needs to be pushed forward or correcting crossbites. They are often successful in young children as compliance is good at this age. Removable braces can only tip teeth and further treatment with fixed brace is often advisable for best results.
We also use growth modification appliances called functional appliances, which are removable as well. These appliances are used during the growth spurt stage of development and are especially helpful in treating cases which would be difficult to treat with just fixed appliances alone. They often allow us to treat a case without the need for extractions.
Both removable and functional appliances still need to be worn 24 hrs a day but can be taken out for eating and sport.
